DescriptionA reproduction of the 18th-century portuguese burin-and-acid print Plano Geral da Cidade de Lisboa em 1785, a map of the city of Lisbon by the printer Francisco Domingos Milcent. The capital of Portugal appears as it was at the end of the reconstruction works undertaken in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, under the leadership of prime-minister the Marquis of Pombal. The city had been nearly razed to the ground in the massive earthquake and tsunami, with some 10 to 100,000 dead, that came to be known as the Great Lisbon Earthquake.
