Marie Kelzer, Los Angeles area Member Since April 2013 Artist Statement For Marie Kelzer it’s all about the visual and visceral senses. What you see is in the eye of the beholder. Marie is a painter, paste paper maker, bookbinder and artist. While studying bookbinding in the mid 1980’s, she fell in love with painting "paste papers". Many of her art works come from this medium which allow for experimentation in colors and forms.

Paste papers are decorative papers hand painted using brushes, tools and household gadgets to create designs over a surface covered with a paste and acrylic paints mixture. They were used for both cover papers and endpapers during the 16th through 18th centuries and made a comeback in the 20th century.
Marie searches for what lies beneath the surface, exposing those hidden emotions in order to create tranquility. She combs estate sales for tools to drag through the paint, exposing patterns that bring paints to life, as reflected in architectural patterns, childhood farm fields of stripes and the nearby ocean.
Marie Kelzer has enjoyed working with her hands, from working on production lines in factories to creating pieces of artwork in Minnesota where she grew up. In 1982, she worked for a small family-run bindery where interest in bookbinding and the book arts first developed. Aside from being self-taught she trained at several binderies and studied under Anne Kahle in Oakland, California.
