Katie Flowers, Chicago Member Since March 2011 Artist Statement My name is Katie Vishelle Flowers. I born in Missouri, but raised on the South side of Chicago, Illinois. I received my B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a major in painting and drawing with emphasis in art education and art therapy. I am family oriented, and community based. I am currently a member of the Salvation Army where I perform as art Instructor for the after school programs, as well as volunteer board member for one of it's many community Corps centers. I highly recommend donating time and money to this particular resource.
I founded SAI Simply Arty Ink, Inc. in 1994. The mission of the On-line Web site is to help promote the arts and the living artist by providing quality art lesson plans that are geared to encourage the participant to explore and experiment with the what if's in art and explore freedom of expression. In addition I provide and assist those who are interested in providing professional development workshops and seminars for educators and teaching artists. www.simplyartyink.art.officelive.com
I started off as a traditional Visual artist by interest of painting and drawing. I have been drawing for over 40yrs. and painting for over 30ty something. I know that makes me sound old, but the reality according to my mom is that I have been drawing since the age of 3yrs old. I recall selling my first marker on cardboard drawing of Charlie Brown and the Peanut Gallery around the age of 9yrs old. So, many of my experiences in life got started early. I certainly believe that my gift is from God.
Up to date. I have had the good pleasure of working with some of Chicago's leading art academic institutions and recreational centers as art teacher/Instructor providng art curriculum and instruction from how to Create murals, and instruct adult watercolor landscaping classes to successfully putting together art groups and art coalitions. As a poetess some of my written work can be viewed in a couple of The Library of Congress Anthologies amoung other publications.
My work is evolving. Today I enjoy working with traditional methods and modern technology. I encourage experimenation and exploration. If I did not then my interest and talent, I'm afraid would stifle. A gift is a terrible thing to let fall by the wayside.
I'm all about the arts. My interest and knowledge is not just limited to the Visual arts, although my primary study has been and will continue to be in the Visual arts.
The arts speaks to the deepest of instincts; and the deepest of man cause.
I humbly thank all who takes the moment to view my work and take interest in my artistic abilities.
