Getting the Good News
Her smile warms me, he said, almost blushing yet beaming with pride because someone finally recognized his strength and beauty and let him know it.
At last, he said, I dont have to hold hands with my keyboard all night, typing unheard messages into a darkness that can neither be explored nor understood.
She makes me laugh, he grinned, and it feels so good to sit across the table from a friendly face. The food tastes better, the wine is richer, and who needs dessert when a giving heart is waiting?
He looked away, embarrassed, knowing wed come close to going there ourselves. But, time and circumstances being what they were, it never happened.
My smile was steady and sincere as I told him how glad I was that his caul of loneliness had been torn away, that he was feeling warmed and loved and wanted after all those months of solitary silence broken only by the cold electronic beep of far-away friends hed never seen typing into the night.
And I am glad, because my friend who so deserves to be is happy.
His happiness has ripped a ragged wound in my self-spun cloak of camaraderie, dependent as it is on the vagaries of hairthin wire and the unknowable mysteries of the unseen ether. 2000, renewed 2012 RC deWinter
