Description Original photo of one of the monuments at the Antietam National Battlefield. The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland and was the bloodiest single day battle in American history with over 23,000 killed, wounded or missing. Although the battle was tactically inconclusive, it had unique significance as enough of a victory to give President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to announce his Emancipation Proclamation, which discouraged the British and French governments from potential plans for recognition of the Confederacy. Today there is a peacefulness and quiet over this land that once saw so much blood spilled.
