Description On September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, the Battle of Antietam was fought. It was the first major battle of the American Civil War that was fought on Northern soil and was the bloodiest single day battle in American history. In all, there were 23,000 Union and Confederate casualties. To put that in perspective, it is more than the casualties in the entire American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War combined. The road you see here was awash in blood as opposing soldiers fired at each other from either side of these fences. Digitally enhanced photo.
