John Connell, Newport Beach Member Since July 2008 Artist Statement John Connell began his professional career in 1978 following his study of photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. His ability to recognize the most interesting elements of design and document them in superlative fashion has been acknowledged by some of the most influential leaders in the fields of art and architecture. His images have heralded countless changes to the beautiful South Coast Metro area of Orange County, developed most notably through the visionary direction of Henry Segerstrom whose association with Connell spans more than 20 years.
Connell’s work has graced the pages of innumerable publications, including Coast Magazine, Riviera, OC360, Landscape Architect, and others, and his portfolio of images represents a generation of growth by such prominent Southern California developers as the Irvine Company, the Mission Viejo Company, The Koll Company, Lennar Development, and more. His photographic library includes countless images of a number of significant golf clubs including Oak Creek, Shady Canyon, Pelican Hill, Royal Troon and others, and his collection of local surf, beach, sailing, and harbor shots is unmatched. Connell’s photographs can be seen in the 2007 Visitor’s Guide of the Newport Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, and have been featured in a number of coffee table books representing a range of subjects from the wonders of Norway, to the beauty of Irvine Ranch and the charm of the Crystal Cove Cottages nestled along the shoreline of what is now Newport Coast.
Connell has also become known for his Photographic Fine Art, many pieces of which have been specifically selected to adorn the walls of corporation headquarters and exclusive private residences. Many of his framed pieces can be viewed at the Newport Lexus dealership in Newport Beach, CA where Connell maintains a private gallery. Originally from Ontario, Canada, Connell has traveled to and photographed many parts of the world, often accompanying others whose adventures he documents along the way. He currently lives in Southern California and can very often be found along the sun-drenched shorelines spanning the coast, camera in hand, chasing light and line and capturing images of anything and everything.
