Description The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is the largest covered market in the world, consisting of over 5,000 merchants, at least 3,000 of them crowded under one roof in the original centuries-old building constructed under the Ottoman Sultans. The prices may not be the best in Turkey, but you can hardly beat the selection or variety. Walking the aisles and hallways can be frankly overwhelming. This shop is only one of many specializing in colorful lamps of every type. Others display hand-painted pottery, hand-carved meerschaum pipes, handwoven rugs and carpets, scarves, cheap clothing, dishes, gold and silver jewelry, and every sort of exotic souvenir.
Josh Wentz, Ankara, Turkey Member Since January 2008 Artist Statement Photography helps me discover and share with others the beauty and depth I find as I travel and work in Turkey, mostly in central Anatolia. From the capital city to small towns and villages, the people, buildings, history and nature of this country are always worth sharing and remembering.
The capital city of Ankara is currently my home, but I also enjoy the opportunity to occasionally travel through the larger Anatolian plateau and also to the coastal regions near the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean. The smaller towns and villages in these areas particularly interest me, being off the beaten path and full of interesting settings and friendly, unpretentious people. And, of course, the city of Istanbul contains more experiences and photographic opportunities than I could explore in a lifetime.
These galleries display my best work, and I'll be continually uploading new images. In the meantime, please take a look at the slices of Turkish life to be found here, and I hope you like what you see!
