Description This is one of the few cities in South Florida that has resisted the urge to build high rise condos all along the shore line. This Gazebo, looking at it from the beach side, sits where the road meets the beach. At any given time the shaded benches are filled with people, local and tourists, relaxing, enjoying the beauty of the seashore.
Eduardo DeMartino, South Florida Member Since September 2010 Artist Statement Having been born in NJ almost within the shadow of the back side of The Statue of Liberty, then being raised just 10 miles west of New York City instilled in me a love of cities. School was just one of those things that I was required to do. Certainly it was not my main interest. The only time my school interests piqued was while attending art school in NYC.
Three things always fascinated me, art in all its forms, boats of any kind and water including oceans, rivers, lakes and streams. I spent much time drawing, sketching, painting, taking pictures with some very crude old cameras and overall just drinking in the landscape around me, especially the NJ shoreline.
Thus by the time my early thirties was reached I made the decision to move from the city atmosphere to a spectacular seashore area of NJ. Those of you who do not really know the Jersey Shore should take some time to explore it before coming to conclusions that are not accurate. Yes there are some very honky tonk spots but there are also quaint fishing areas, historic old seaside houses, scores of marinas and miles of some of the nicest beaches to be found anywhere. A perfect location for my continued practice of capturing boat and water scenes in whatever media I chose to use at the time.
The art school training must have been somewhat effective since my small advertising agency was successful for a number of years until the late 80’s when I decided to sell it and move on with my life in a different direction. The different direction took me as captain and owner of a cruising boat that I sailed throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean for the next year and then relocated myself into South Florida.
It was a move never regretted. My favorite things, boats, water and cities are all around me and with the fine Florida weather they can be enjoyed 12 months per year. This provides an endless bounty of scenes just waiting to be captured for all to enjoy the beauty.
