Description A delicious butterscotch sundae sits ready to eat. It rests on a wooden table in a booth at an old-fashioned soda fountain. This photograph shows off the textures and shading of the dessert through High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography techniques.
John December, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Member Since December 2007 Artist Statement I've been taking digital photos since 1998, and I'm fascinated with city scenes around me. I've taken images in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I live, as well as Madison, Chicago, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and other places I've traveled. Many of these photos are on my Web site, arranged in my flickr sets, and a select few are available for sale here. Let me know if you would like to buy any of my images through imagekind, and I can place the image here for sale.
I'm inspired by paintings. Particularly Edward Hopper--his use of emptiness, light, geometry, and the tension in his apparently simple images continue to amaze me. I like impressionist paintings with their patterns of color and emphasis on light. I also learn a great deal from my fellow photographers as well as from going on photowalks.
I'm also inspired by stories. I love taking photos where there is an implied story, or where I can invite the viewer to come and sit down or place themselves in the scene.
In developing my own style, I enjoy taking documentary-style shots of places and people. I like to take photos of people as they are doing things and interacting. I like to take photos of the everyday beauty of my surroundings.
My photography has been used by many individuals and businesses for print and online use and has been exhibited in Light Ideas Gallery in Milwaukee. My photos have been published in Milwaukee Magazine, The Shepherd Express, American City Calendars, and other print publications as well as selected for use on Web sites.
My Internet information efforts date back to 1992, and my writing includes published academic journal articles, chapters, magazine articles, and books covering HTML, Java, and computer-mediated communication. I have given presentations about the Internet and online communication to a variety of audiences worldwide and have taught college-level courses in computer science, expository writing, computer-mediated communication, and creative writing. I developed software and graphical user interfaces to analyze requirements for aircraft missions at Boeing's military division. My poetry has been published in literary magazines including Mid-American Review, Sou'wester, Passages North, and others.
