Fran Caldwell, Sydney Member Since October 2008 Artist Statement I've been a painter for so long, winning competitions as young as 14, and still as passionate about it many years later. My work encompasses a variety of subjects - simple folk art, portraits, animals, landscapes, whichever way each day takes me. I can't settle on one style, one kind of art, which I guess can confuse buyers at first, but ultimately pleases them, as they wonder what I'll be doing next.
My Gran character came to me in Australia, and - despite her travels - keeps popping up on some new adventure. She sometimes even shows up in non-related pictures! In some ways (not yet physically) she is me, and we share the same foibles and eccentricities, the same somewhat lop-sided view of life.
I have lived and worked in Canada, England, Australia, and traveled to many other countries, always restless, always ready for change. The seascapes are from Australia, and the country scenes from Canada and England.
My buyers often speak of the humor in my art, or the endearing quality of the people, children and animals (I am passionate about animals – they deserve our utmost respect and kindness) and I am pleased when someone tells me my pictures make them smile. You'll find no cynicism in my paintings, only a child-like view of the world. Considering the world today, that's not a bad attitude.
My paintings can be a bit sentimental, probably a little hokey at times, but - except for a brief period in my teens when I produced angst-ridden portraits and cityscapes - I paint nothing but happy stuff now. Hope you agree.
