Artist Statement Although Robert has lived most of his life in Indiana, he was born in Washington State and grew up in North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. As a young boy he loved the outdoors and spent much of his time in the countryside learning about nature and wildlife. These experiences have contributed to his deep respect and appreciation of nature and wildlife.
Bob has always enjoyed drawing and painting. It was in the second grade that he first realized he had a talent for art. When he was 13 years old his parents took the family on a vacation through South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana and observed the incredible scenery. On the trip they stayed a couple of days in Yellowstone National Park where he was able to see grizzlies, moose and other wildlife in their natural habitat. This trip had a lifelong impression on him.
Bob is basically a self taught artist. He graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Business Administration. While at Ball State he took four art classes which reinforced his belief that he had the talent to someday become a professional artist.
Bob first learned to paint using oils and continued using them for many years. Eventually, he switched to acrylics due to their versatility and quick-drying characteristics. Bob also enjoys occasionally producing pen and ink works.
During Bob’s lifetime he has painted numerous subjects in a variety of techniques and media. Over the years he has developed a preference for painting landscapes and wildlife. With Bob’s painting style, it is always a challenge to get the details correct. Consequently, he has a library of thousands of photographs that he has taken. He also keeps twigs, dead leaves, feathers and many other reference materials in his studio.
Over the years Bob and his wife have been able to travel extensively throughout North America spending time in numerous national parks. This has allowed Bob to build his extensive library of photographs. It has also given him the chance to personally experience incredible outdoor scenery and observe wildlife in their natural habitat.
Although he spent most of his career in the business world, he has painted throughout his life. It is only recently that he decided to become a full time professional landscape/wildlife artist. Some of his wildlife art has already been licensed and appears on various commercial products.
