Jay Broin, Toronto Member Since January 2009 Artist Statement
I am a full-time artist living and working in Toronto, Canada.
I believe I was born to be an artist. I come from an artistic family, and have been creating art since I was a young child. My favourite tool then was my hands, and they are still my means of connecting with my work, and of using the tools my work requires. My hands are the artist, my eyes, the critic.
I enjoy my calling because it gives me the opportunity to express myself in the work I do, to try to make the world a more beautiful place, and to spend each day doing something I love.
I begin a work by laying out the colours and forms in my mind. A work has turned out well for me when it captures a glimmer of the inspiration that was its starting point and catalyst.
My current work is expanding on several themes. My landscapes are attempting to express the wonder of nature and the world around us, and to convey that in a style which embeds those emotions within the structure of the paintings themselves. My abstracts are exploring the ways in which colour, form and texture can be combined to create a sense of depth, movement and feeling within a two-dimensional surface. My figurative works are trying to impart the beauty and grace present in humanity and the human form.
Overall, my work strives to convey the divinity which permeates the world around us, and to merge the themes and meaning of art’s past with the styles and techniques of its present.
The originals of many of my works are also available for purchase, email me for more information.
