Rana Awdish, Northville Member Since February 2010 Artist Statement As a practicing intensive care unit physician, I use painting as a way to process and integrate the experiences of my life. My paintings reflect both the fragility and strength inherent to being alive and human. Each one is representative of a different facet of our emotional life. They capture the wide range of emotion, from angst and despair to hope. As sickness amplifies all of our senses and our appreciation of life, art amplifies our understanding of what it means to be human and alive.
In the tradition of figurative art, but decidedly lowbrow, my paintings combine elements of the everyday and the surreal, juxtaposing images in a whimsical fashion. You'll find irreverent paintings in which allegories abound and anthropomorphic figures participate in disquieting, and occasionally bizarre, narratives. With a touch of surrealism, emotions are revealed and the subtext of all of our lives is illuminated.
