Duke Johnson, Syracuse Member Since January 2009 Artist Statement Duke Johnson has been obsessed with photography for 20 years, ever since he took two photography classes at Valley City State University in North Dakota. While he has taken photos all across the US, Northwest Territory of Canada, and Norway, he has concentrated on the southwestern US for the last 10 years, amassing some of the best photos possible of our National Parks and Monuments.
His work focuses mainly on nature’s beauty and creations and aims to give a unique perspective on some of the most visited places in the US through painstaking planning, composition, and by capturing dynamic skies with just the right light. He only accepts the best of his work in regards to clarity, vibrant colors, detail, and sharp crisp images. He goes to great lengths to pre-plan shots, using an intimate knowledge of the cycles of the sun & moon to enable him to be in just the right position at the right time of day or night. Driven to get to the best locations at the optimal times, he is able to glean the best possible illumination; often during very inhospitable conditions. He drives through storms to arrive at locations just as they break, hoping for just the right light and cloud formations and often waits hours or days for the right lighting conditions when on location. By bringing these large high-quality images into people’s homes and businesses, he is able to give others a sense of being out in the field during extremely special moments in time.
Recently he has been capturing near life-size images of amazing landscapes with GB panoramic photography, allowing huge images to be printed in vivid detail. These shots are some of his most favored works, because at 3’ x 6’ or larger, they make you feel that you are part of that specific environment—if only for a short time.
