Artist Statement Derek Bliss San Diego Born 01/28/88, Oil painting has always been an uphill battle for me and still is to this day; it is a difficult practice and strains my eyes and perception to draw out the emotion and event that I am subconsciously searching for. I have studied painting independently and academically for six years under Concetta Antico’s Mission Hills Salon of Art, and in the fine art programs at Pasadena City College, and Grossmont Community College. I have had most enjoyment and fulfillment producing oil paintings while traveling and have had most of my success in sales while traveling as well. The topic of my paintings has yet to settle in one area and I am, at the age of twenty two exploring subjective compositions, geometric compositions, a wide array of color groups and palettes, as well as techniques ranging from impressionist, to naturalist, impasto, with under tones of illustrative features in some of my characters. I oil paint, to a degree, in an unconscious manner as throughout my life they accumulate against the wall of my room and spread across states and continents as I move and meet people. In my paintings, I am trying to bring into your life a sense of peace and timeless resolve in hopes that I can emit waves of tranquility in our modern age.
