Donna Blakey, Dover Member Since June 2010 Artist Statement Ever since I was a child I have doodled and drawn pictures. I have always been attracted to colors and shapes. I still have pictures of “Tony the Tiger” of Frosted Flakes Cereal fame and the “Pink Panther” that I painted in elementary school. While an attraction to art and the inclination to capture visual images has always been a constant in my life, I turned my attention towards building a traditional career and raising my three wonderful children, each of them blessed with some ability and interest in the arts. Now that they are all grown I have turned my attention inward. I made the leap from being an admirer and consumer of art to a creator of art. Yes, as a "grown woman" I discovered that maturing in life has been the springboard for me to mature in my creative abilities. I have progressed from doodling and painting “Tony the Tiger” on a ceiling tile to creating captivating images painted in oil and acrylic on canvas. Wow, it's amazing to me. I have entered a whole new world.
I consider myself to be an emerging, virtually self- taught artist and really look forward to the journey. Growing up I was drawn to Van Gogh and later Picasso. I find that I am attracted to figures and portraiture. Those subject matters allow me to use my eye for detail, shape, and value in a way that is natural to me. At this point in time I am most comfortable with representational works and realism. I often work from photographs that I have taken during my travels, especially in the Caribbean. The vibrant colors of the surroundings and well as the vibrancy of the people are mesmerizing.
