Artist Statement Kathleen Casey is an award winning designer, illustrator and painter. After graduating with a degree in painting from the Museum Art School, now the Pacific Northwest College of Art, she pursued an interest in calligraphy and the history of lettering which led to a career in graphic design.

Her design career led her into the social expression industry where she created best selling products for many years. The Greeting Card Association of America has awarded her their highest honor, The Louie, for her design work three times.

An international traveller she has published and received several awards for her photography including an Honorable Mention in the Nikon International Photo Competition.

She is inspired by the wonder of nature in its infinite variety, and by the traditional arts of people around the globe from Africa to Alaska.

Her work reflects a passion for color, whether it is a lusty red, a glowing orange or a regal blue, color evokes emotional responses in human beings like no other. The expressive quality and intrigue of color is simply undeniable. An intense red can be tamed to a sweet pink with the addition of just a small amount of white. A friendly yellow turns acidic by mixing with a tiny spot of blue. Color mutates as it is placed on varying backgrounds. It is mysterious, fickle and continuously compelling.

Texture fascinates as well. Bark sheds off a birch tree, a stucco wall invites the hand to run over it. The paint peeling off a weathered building has always been a draw or the gritty decay of hundreds of handbills stapled to telephone poles. There is something about the rending of old layers combined, tattered and revealed, shredded in rain, wind and sun. What remains, what is lost?

Attempting to bring a sense of mystery through gesture and the layering of space; that which lies beneath is an important theme. Multiple textures & magical colors suggest secret meanings, hidden and implied. The viewer is invited to engage in a dialogue, completing the visual experience within their own imagination.
