DescriptionThe original subject of Female Figure 2 was a former muse and lover of mine. Unlike most of my figure paintings, which are often planned and posed, the idea of this developed from an impromptu situation. One evening as we were entertaining friends, she was lying sideways on the sofa, with her torso propped up by her left elbow. The pose was delightful; it worked particularly well with how she was dressed. I had her stay quite still and as we all enjoyed the fun of the moment as I took some quick flash and braced frames, which I later developed into sketches and this final design. As with Female Figure 1, when people view this painting without knowing its title or knowing in advance that it is a female form they frequently ask, “what is it?” and are often surprised when they discover that it is actually a reclining figure. As with many of my paintings, Female Figure 2 features a female form with a strong, Fauvist use of bold color. Stylization, allure, composition, and design are a major part of my paintings. Major influences on my work include Andre Derain, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Tom Wesselmann, Vincent Van Gogh, Ryu Young Do, Geoffrey Humphries, John Piper, John Sidman, Pablo Picasso, and Gustav Klimt. Female Figure 2 in its original is an acrylic painting on canvas 42 inches x 34 inches.
