Description Fine Dresses is the fifth in my Church Art series, which may seem a bit contradictory at first glance. After all, this acrylic and colored pencil piece depicts an 18th century couple showing less than courtly decorum. Indeed, this painting owes much to Jean Honor Fragonard's The Swing. The delicately glazed textures are reminiscent of the old master's dense foliage, and the saturation of the split-complimentary color scheme is as bold as any young dandy. Nonetheless, the simplified, flattened shapes of the figures give this image a distinctly modern feel, and its biblical inspiration is about as far from the hedonism of Rococo as you can get. Ezekiel 16:15-16 admonishes, But your beauty went to your head and you became a common whore, grabbing anyone coming down the street and taking him into your bed. You took your fine dresses and made 'tents' of them, using them as brothels in which you practiced your trade. Zing.
