Soar across the Kimberly landscape crossing gullies and rocky outcrops following the riverbed as it meanders across the plain with the sun glinting through the clouds as they pass overhead. This was our challenge piece in my current exhibition TRIO with Mary Thomas and Chris Marshall. To paint separate artworks inspired by the same reference material to show our individual interpretations. The challenge began by selecting a photo from a selection that we had put together that would allow us the scope to develop it and make it our own. The photo selected was an aerial view over the Bungle Bungle region in the Kimberly, Western Australia. Each of us immediately saw potential and the process began. We each saw something different that inspired us, taking different sections from within the photograph, expanding on them to produce our version of Flight over the Bungle BunglesWinner of Best Contemporary Artwork, Melville Community Art Association Awards 2011The ProcessI chose to accentuate the bands of colour that formed from the shadows of overhead clouds. A more abstract view than I would normally paint.Firstly, I started with some sweeping motions of charcoal across the white canvas following the perceived flow of the riverbed, identifying some areas of higher texture to make it more interesting. I then ran some acrylic inks across the canvas to form the under painting, this gave me depth of colour as well as bright highlights.By now I have discarded the photo and begin working in the acrylic paints using glazing techniques between layers to create distance and the shadows of the overhead clouds. I worked with brushes, palette knives and fingers!Lastly, I added life with a flock of white cockatoos entering the scene in the bottom left hand corner on their way to their next nightly resting place.
Debra Scidone, Perth, Western Australia Member Since August 2009 Artist Statement Hi, I'm Debra Scidone and through my art, I can welcome you into my world.
I endeavour to capture a sense of intimacy and seclusion. I have a passion for nature and the beauty it shows in all its forms. My works feature the many places I have been to, from the coastline to the Australian outback. My styles move through from almost photographic to loose and free. Colour and light produce the mood and atmosphere.
I began painting as a full time artist in 2001 with Watercolours and Pastels, but now enjoy all mediums, Oils, Acrylics and Mixed media. As an artist I allow myself to get lost in the process of achieving the end result and often find myself asking “How did I do that?”
