BLACK & WHITE: Traditional black and white prints are and will be classics, especially now with technology of digital affecting the photo industry. There will be only a few true craftsmen around to print ture black & white silver prints and the silver print will be regarded as classic photography, just as classic automobiles. As it is now, I have students that say they don’t want or need to learn the “Old” way of capturing and printing photos and are more interested in the new "digital darkroom". I must admit that there are a lot of viable reasons why digital is better then your traditional darkroom, but I won’t get into making this a class lecture. I will say that there are definetly pro’s and con’s of black and white digital photography. A good parity is the film industry. You have your motion pictures or movies still shot on film and you have video which has a different look and quality then film. One is sensitized silver which has a softer quality to it and the digital image is hard and contrasty. Two very different recording materials to capture the “fleeting” image. But the digital image is getting better everyday. Even as I am writing this, new hardware and software are being up graded and soon the manufactures of traditional photographic materials haven’t gotten on board the ” boat” will find themselves on a sinking ship! (Like Polaroid).
