"The Mutability of Luna" is a series of 9 paintings. The group of nine is to be considered one artwork, and is meant to be viewed in a horizontal sequence. The original paintings are each 12 x 9 inches, done in oil on linen. Copyright 1999 by Sheryl Humphrey.

Viewed in the proper sequence, the series shows 9 phases of the moon as a woman's life cycle. Starting from the fetal moon, the grouping moves to the small child, to the girl, to the teenager, to the young woman, to the young mother, to the older woman, to the crone, to the skeletal moon.

The eyes of the moon begin closed, then open gradually to their widest at the full moon. They then gradually close again, ending with the skull. The cycle is then completed, and will start again.
