These charts are completely my own style, a mix of imagination and reality.
Through my years of traveling, I’ve grown attached to maps and charts. Most of the useful ones are left-brain engineered and not intended to be ‘pretty’.
I’m not recommend charting your course using a map covered with mermaids and sea monsters, but, these are precise enough they could be in a pinch. I had a few advantages over the cartographers of old.
Each chart and map shown here, was created for the same reasons, mainly, I wanted it for myself. Showing the place I was living, sailing and diving, and I wanted it correct - showing the names and location of the bays and towns I was enjoying. In addition, I wanted to create it in an old world style using India ink and watercolor washes; embellished with sailing ships, mermaids, sea monsters and small island vignettes covering every scrap of available paper. To me this combination, formed a synergy and spliced the present with the past.
I’ve enjoyed living and creating my charts and other artwork in Belize, Honduras, Thailand, Egypt and now the BVI. Like each place - each chart has it’s own character.
I’ve discovered; when others connect to my charts, they are usually travelers too.
*Not for navigational purposes, use your G.P.S., polarized sunglasses, watch the grog intake and do not blame a mermaid.
