In Central Greece an ancient sea was drained 60 million years ago. The ensuing epochs saw the gradual erosion of the seabed until all that were left are the cliff forms that are visible today. They look otherworldly, and for about 1000 years have been the haunt of ascetics. Now, of course, modern roads have brought tourism to the area, bringing the hermits a good deal of company.
