The year is 1848. You are a new cabin boy; this is your first voyage. Although you have an uncle who is retired from the sea, his stories from his sailing days are only now beginning to live in your imagination as you face your first night at sea aboard ship. Will the other older, more experienced sailors mock you - or worse? Will your stomach withstand the rolling and tossing of the ship, or will you shame yourself by being seasick? And provender - from what you remember Uncle Josiah telling you, it can be pretty bad - moldy cheese, leathery salted beef, weevilly hardtack...
Ah well, nothing to do but go down, act brave, and find out.
