Artist Statement Jenn Sitron is an artist and teacher living and working in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. She received her B.A in Visual Arts from Columbia University, and her M.F.A in Photography from Hunter College, and currently teachers Art and Hebrew at Brooklyn Academy HIgh School in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Though she holds a Master’s degree in Fine Art Photography, Jenn considers herself an artist first and a photographer second. Her past is in paintings and drawing, and she is currently working with collage.

Jenn’s master’s degree thesis show (Hunter College, 2002) was titled, “Symmetries in Nature”. She marked nature with chalk, drawing on tree bark, rocks, and other surfaces, completing natural forms symmetrically. This interaction highlights our relationships with nature.

Jenn writes:
In every photograph I take I aim to connect with nature. How can I become part of the outer natural environment? What in nature, is outside me and what is inside? Are the boundaries fixed or fluid? Society creates so many separations that we are polarized in a world of dualities: mind vs. body, man vs. nature, instinct vs. intellect. I struggle to exist within this unsettling paradigm and yet I use this very system to negotiate my place in the world. With each new attempt, do I come closer in understanding my place? Can I blur the separation between the inside and outside? The altering of landscapes and natural objects through photography reflects a mental process of creating the world I want to live in.

After graduating, Jenn continued to develop this work of altering her perception and relationship with the natural world outside her, in such photography series as: Color Nature (2003), Shadow Nature (2004), Fabric Nature (2005).

In 2006, feeling this photography cycle had been completed, Jenn began drawing with magic markers and making collages out of the drawings. While still referencing nature and natural landscapes, the new images represent a different and more abstract direction in her work.
