Artist Statement Jamila grew up in New England, spending most of her time painting, reading, writing and talking to trees. She moved to New York City in 2004 to study Literature and Journalism with a focus on Renaissance, Arabic and Gender (New York University). In 2006 she journeyed to Italy and Morocco: directly connecting her texts with the stones and spirits of Florence, exploring the flow of science and information from east to west, rediscovering her soul’s tie to the desert. Haunted by the Renaissance city and the Sahara’s sands, she expanded her studies to include Christian Gnosticism and Egyptian Art.

After a 7-year relationship with NYC multitasking as an artist, graphic designer, editor and Kundalini yogi, she felt the call of the desert. Lulled by the land, inspired by the sky, her spiritual studies continued in New Mexico beginning in 2011 under the guidance of shamans. Meanwhile, her profiles on Albuquerque artists were featured in Local iQ magazine, and in January 2013 her first theatre production, Mystery in Morocco premiered at Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill, described as “a delightful farce” by Albuquerque’s Q Claps magazine. After a glorious two years devouring chili and thebiggestskiesyou’veeverseen in the Land of Enchantment, Jamila returned to New England and now lives in Boston’s North Shore, continuing to paint and write (and sing and dance…)

Working with mixed media, including many recycled and found materials, Jamila’s fine art works involve archetypal imagery and abstract themes inspired by mythology and wisdom of the Ancients. Her approach to creation blends the power of word and image, for painting is silent poetry (Plutarch). Her zest for knowledge, love of etymology and dexterity with symbolic language culminate in bodies of work that cross time, space and media. Their common thread is remembrance – remembering the knowledge of civilizations past during which life on Earth was thriving and abundant.
