R. Mike Nichols, riverside, ca Member Since March 2009 Artist Statement I received my BFA in Illustration and Masters in Art from California State University, Long Beach. I worked for many years as a freelance Illustrator for various magazines, card companies and non-profits. I have also shown my work in many exhibits and galleries and I have received numerous awards along the way.
I moved to Riverside in 2002 from San Francisco. I am a member of the Corona Art Association, National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, American Watercolor Society, Chaffey Community Art Association and the Riverside Art Museum.
My work was chosen to become a poster in the 2004, 2006 and 2008 “Future of Reading” Competition. My acrylic painting “White Monsta” was purchased by the Riverside Art Museum for their Permanent Collection during their 2008 “Off The Wall” Event. Two of my watercolors received awards in the 2008 “Dominick Frascella Show” in Corona garnering a First Place and an Honorable Mention. "Crazy Lilly" won a merchandize award at the 2009 Multi Media Mini Show in Redlands and "The Curious World of Reynaldo and his Twist of Lime Suit" received a Best of Show at the Founder's Day Show in Corona. I was named Artist of the Year at the Corona Art Association in both 2009 & 2010.
I work in both watercolor on paper and acrylic on canvas and masonite. I would describe my paintings as expressionistic realism with a dash of whimsy thrown in from time to time.
