Yasmine Diaz, Los Angeles
Member Since February 2010
Artist Statement Yasmine Diaz is a primarily self-taught artist, drawing and painting since her
childhood days in Chicago. As soon as she could escape the Midwest, Yasmine moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to independently explore new artistic territories, including oil and figure painting. It was there that she studied with contemporary realist painter Brian O’Connor at the Harwood Arts Center, where she perfected her portraiture skills working from live models. During a relocation to Los Angeles, Yasmine’s work shifted from representational portraits to urban studies of abstracted realism, but a recent year in Buenos Aires, Argentina refocused Yasmine’s work on the human form and portrait.

Her last series of oil paintings observes the vibrant and diverse characteristics that unify urban metropolitan areas, drawing on her experiences in Los Angeles, New York, Rome, and Buenos Aires. This series emerged as a product of Yasmine’s curious and unique approach to urban exploration – wandering its streets and hidden corners to discover the distinctive and shared characteristics of cities across the world. She draws the city’s personality through the faces and facades of its train riders, shop windows, subway stations, and open spaces.
