Artist Statement "There is a lack of understanding in each successive technologically advanced generation of the beautiful, slow process of making something with your hands"

Although I have recently completed a B.A. (hons) degree (2:1) in Fine Art from the University of Wolverhampton in the UK, I have been a casual artist and a more serious practitioner for nearly fifteen years, my training being both in academic methods and more contemporary styles.

Although British by birth, born outside Durham in northern England, I have had a varied upbringing, living in Malta as well as the USA. I feel this has impacted on my life choices as well as shaped the way I look at and make art. I have had exceptional teachers, whether it be Harry Alden in Malta, who showed me that traditional could still be exciting and challenging, to Patricia Shaw in Portsmouth USA, who gave me a good grounding in the basics. For this reason, I plan to pass on this knowledge and enthusiasm to other learners in the future in some way.

My paintings, at their best, consider the "hinge" between abstraction and representation and address the dynamics and conflict in the understanding of imitation and expression. I am interested in an economy and immediacy in the brushstrokes that has the potential to draw attention away from the ‘reality’ of the representational image to the actuality of painting as painting. Using representational images, I subvert the reading of these images, either by disturbing the surface texture or the conventions of composition. This gives the paintings a presence, alive with possibilities, colour and vibrancy.
