Jeff Gurganus Member Since April 2011 Artist Statement I have been an art enthusiast since early childhood. Have always gravitated toward realism and naturalistic style paintings (i.e. landscape art); however, ever since being introduced to Salvador Dalí in my high school Spanish class, my tastes have evolved to a more surrealistic and fantastical style. I love to experiment with perspective, whether inside a room or pear trees along a runner's favorite path. Light and darks are fun, too. For example, the way the sun penetrates a thick forest or a single grand oak casting a cool shadow in a sunny park. Figure-drawing is also a good, fun challenge. A good artist not only has a good handle on offering depth perception through foreshortening techniques, but also can smoothly capture movement through flowing limbs - making it seem that the character is just about to take another step or even jump off the page! ...I'd love to say that I'm a master of all of these, but I can only say that these are the goals that I always strive for in my art. Oh, and did I mention how much I LOVE Asian (especially ancient Chinese) art and calligraphy!
