Artist Statement Heather Miller is from Indiana. She serves the children of Oak Farm Montessori School as the campus art specialist and teaches students after school in her personal studio. Heather also writes children’s books with two recent publications, SUBWAY RIDE and THIS IS YOUR LIFE CYCLE both receiving notable awards including the Oppenheimer Gold Seal. While Heather writes children’s books, she chooses not to illustrate her own work. She prefers to paint abstract, expressive pieces.
“I am most happy when I work intuitively and let the medium take me to unexpected places. When I paint I may begin a project with a color scheme in mind but that is often a very loose guideline that is sometimes changed midway through my work. To some viewers my paintings may seem unorganized. On the contrary I pay close attention to composition as layers of color and texture are applied with a brush, pallet knife, or squeeze bottle. At times I even use my own breath to move the paint across the canvas. I want my paintings to show excitement, movement, and power.”
These past months I have been experimenting with clay by creating organic, hand-thrown, slab vessels. A wide range of natural material, including rocks, corn, leaves, seeds, pine needles, bark, and grass, to name a few, were used to imprint the clay with texture. Sometimes I threw the slabs directly onto the materials letting the clay pick up the impressions of objects as it spread across the work surface. While making each piece I followed the guidance given by the shape of the actual slab, the strength of the clay, and my mood and temperament of the day. The very movement of the clay working with and against gravity dictated its final form. It is my hope that each piece captures a feeling of life and movement, as if the work itself were an organic, living being. Please enjoy!
