Susan Doyle, Newfoundland Member Since July 2013 Artist Statement The Road Less Traveled...
The self-taught artist takes the path less traveled. It can often be difficult finding your own way without the necessary skills, but a true artist cannot turn a blind eye to the desire to create from within. A true artist must dig deep, close their eyes and believe; believe that one day their less traveled path will be a familiar one, filled with satisfaction, elation and contentment and the companionship of those that want to share in the journey.
Being an artist does not simply mean you are good at sketching or painting, or that you can act, sing or dance. It means succumbing to the voice in the depths of your soul and letting go to all that you are without fear of rejection or ridicule. It means pushing yourself to the edge of your being and making a new path all your own. A true artist listens to what is inside and creates from within without any constraints or limits from the outside world.
The process has not been an easy one, as I am self-taught trying to listen to what is inside and produce. Sometimes I vision a masterpiece in its entirety in my sleep; sometimes I have to stare at a blank canvas for 3 days before I settle on a single vision; other times I just let the brush do the painting.
Whatever the method, I am most satisfied and complete when I listen to my silence and give in to my emotions and the artist that lies within.
