Description I spent two years near Kyoto Japan, and this was done from a photo taken during a return trip. The rice fields outside the city do reflect the mountains and this is near the house of an old friend
Clare Johns, Sewickley, PA Member Since January 2014 Artist Statement I have enjoyed drawing and painting most of my life, majoring during college in the history of Art, and later training in oil and pastel painting at several museum schools. I fell in love with pastels about 20 years ago, and have since focused on their use in my work, especially in depicting landscapes, and natural beauty of all sorts. I love how they allow spontaneous responses to a subject, and my memories and love of the subject contribute a great deal to the final outcome, as well as long-term editing of color, space, light and edging. My goal is to communicate the serenity and beauty of my subjects on a physical as well as a spiritual level, and to grow as an artist in the use of this medium. I have sold pieces through local galleries, and also have worked with personal commissions for portraiture and other subjects.
