Sara Butcher-Burrier, Des Moines Member Since October 2008 Artist Statement I started drawing a lot in elementary school, working on how to draw Ariel from Disney's "The Little Mermaid". The next memory is of my mom leaving for a trip to California and I drew her a bunch of neon fairies with markers. I believe "Fantasia" sparked that one.
Needless to say, I've been drawing fairies for a majority of my life, and haven't stopped. I went from Disney, to Marvel comics, to Manga, and finally in my last years of college I traveled to Scotland and rediscovered my love of fairytales. Back to fairies.
Now that my hand knows it's own gesture, I strive to not learn what to draw, but how...and from where.
I gather a lot of my imagery from visions filled with emotion, light, the depth of internal darkness, and the grace that saves. My studio is filled with inspiration to that which is beautiful, but also raw.
I live in Iowa with my supportive and unconditionally loving husband, and our two cats (our babies) Madie and Talor.
