Description The brilliant red male cardinal perched on snowy branches. This collage is made entirely of paper cut from magazines. No paint was used and each little piece of paper is hand applied onto canvas with gel medium. The male cardinal is always a fantastic sight to behold, especially in the winter. His vibrant red plumage stands out beautifully on crisp white snow. No matter how many times I've seen them fluttering about in the snow, when I spot one I always have to stop and take notice. They're very eye-catching birds whose natural beauty is inspiring to photographers and artists alike. They are also the state bird of Ohio, my home state. I've been fortunate to grow up in a place where these birds are commonly found but never taken for granted.
Shawna Rowe Member Since July 2012 Artist Statement I grew up in a creative family who loved photography, music, art and random hiking adventures. That helped me to develop a love for nature and artistic expression early on. I've never limited myself to one particular medium but I do favor graphic shapes, bold colors and whimsical style. Whatever the medium, I try to include some or all of those elements in my work.
My family has always been a big inspiration and they feature in a series of satirical cartoons that I've done just for fun over the years. Each year I make a new cartoon to celebrate each of my daughter's birthdays. I've also made my own greeting cards for family members over the years.
Lately, I've been making detailed magazine collages. Each one is made of 100% recycled paper cut into tiny shapes and carefully applied much like paint onto canvas. It's an art-form that requires a lot of time and patience but I love this unusual way of creating. Thank you for visiting my gallery!
