Artist Statement Artist, painter, illustrator and entrepreneur Alisa Mbinakar began her career in 1989 after she graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design where she majored in Illustration. For years Alisa taught art in and around the Columbus area. Her love for fine art led her to open Mixed Media Heritage Gallery in downtown Columbus Ohio in the spring of 1995. Her gallery gave her a chance to showcase her art as well as the art of other area artist and designers. For nearly ten years Mixed Media Heritage Gallery gave downtown Columbus a truly ethnic and original flare, by featuring a large variety of original artist, crafted art and home décor. The gallery held artist exhibits throughout the year and featured artist such as, Kojo Kamau, Father James Hasse and Larry Winston Collins to name a few. She has also exhibited her art in a number of local galleries such as the William H. Thomas Gallery, Frank Hale Black Cultural Center, Columbus’ Mayor’s Office, and the Columbus Cultural Art Center to name a few.

Alisa’s love for art expands beyond paper and canvas to encompass the world of what she calls functional art. Alisa’s art is part of many private collections in the form of painted canvas and functional art. Like art from a historical perspective many of the objects that we call art today started out with very practical purposes and became viewed as art because of their beauty. Alisa enjoys creating and taking existing objects and recreating them to show that function can be beautiful. She was commissioned in 2000 to create a custom hand painted clock for Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman. This clock currently hangs in the Mayor’s office. She also enjoys creating unique jewelry and art that can be worn on the body. Her wearable art has been included in upscale style shows and sold in the Columbus Museum of Art gift shop as well as several other gift shops and galleries throughout the country. Her diverse interests include sculpting, photography web design and computer graphics. Samples of her art can be viewed on her website at www.aymgraphics.com or in her deviantary gallery at http://bigvallysgirl.deviantart.com/gallery You can also follow Alisa on twitter at www.twitter.com/bigvallysgirl
