DescriptionThe timeless butterfly symbol of transformation, beauty and nature. It has been used in many cultures and religions for the idea of the spirit and soul. Sometimes overused as cliché decorative element today, it still holds a very strong visual and intellectual power for me. This simplified and stylized form of butterfly was originally created in acrylic on canvas in dimensions 20”x 16”. It was inspired by Henri Matisse, his use of colors and cut-outs, by Pop Art and by Art Nouveau stylization of natural forms for decorative purposes. Thoughts about grandiosity and spiritual power of a butterfly brought to my mind names of Roman Emperors, after which series of butterfly paintings was loosely named, adding fun, colour and playfulness to the whole idea
Jarmila Kostliva, Vancouver Member Since July 2007 Artist Statement Collections of works were created for contemporary home and office decor. Some of them were created as an illustrations and décor for my daughter’s room. The main idea was to follow the inspired though of space, infused with vivid colors, themes of light, sun and spirit. At the same time offering suggestions for timeless motivations, to live in harmony with nature and our surroundings. Techniques and media in these works are a separate to my other website where I explore paintings in more depth, ideas, concept and techniques.
