Mauna Ziona (Mount Zion) Church at Kalaua, on the Big Island of Hawai’i, was built around 1900 to replace a mission-era church whose ruins are still to be seen behind the cemetery. It is a textbook version of the “Establishment church” image. And also a textbook example of traditional sanctuary elements: the plot defined by wall and gate, the upright comprised of church building plus belfry set literally on a mount.
