Stephanie Fysh, an Imagekind featured member artist in October 2008, came to photography with a childhood aversion to cameras and a PhD-induced penchant for theory. Her photographs have since been exhibited in the 2006 and 2007 CONTACT Toronto Photography Festivals and in a fall 2007 juried international group exhibition at Tallahassee's 621 Gallery, are held in private collections across North America, and have been published in magazines, on cultural organization websites, and in fine-art postcard series. Interviews with Stephanie appear on Utata.org and on poet Sina Queyras's website Lemon Hound: Contemporary Arts & Letters, Interviews & Features.
These architectural views, cinematic and erotic photographs, and other landscapes explore the relationship between the physical world we build, the culture we weave, and the selves we construct within those physical and cultural spaces. At times this exploration masks itself in the entirely fictive but still recognizably photographic; at others it takes on the cloak of the documentary. At times these photographs give in to the ideology of photographic immediacy; at other times they let through the technological mediation of light that is the essence of this art. In tracing, bending to shape, and making material envisioned moments of sublimity, both large-scale and intimate, intended and unintended, the photographer seeks here to illuminate the equivalent possibilities of the conscious construction of self – of a personal sublime – and of an erotics of the constructed world. Or at least to make you look up.
