Graphic designer by day, artist by night.
It seems I spend most of my day, every day, involved in the creative arts. It seems I spend most of my day, every day, involved in the creative arts. Whether it is designing a logo for a client across the country or cranking the wheel of a printing press in the museum across the street. I have a background in the arts (B.A. in Graphic Design) from the demanding curriculum of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, where I developed a discerning eye and thick skin (critiques) by the time graduation rolled around in 1991. Since then I have worked as a graphic designer in the creative departments for several top, national public relations firms in Washington, DC. I have been on my own now for over 15 years -- running a small design studio in Raleigh, NC.
Art has always been a big part of my life…starting back in high school where I couldn’t get enough of the sculpture and photo studios. My first big purchase as a kid was my own black and white darkroom that I set up in my childhood home. After graduating from college, I spent most of my free time in the medium of collage. You could often find me on the weekends as an art show exhibitor in the DC metro area selling my latest “masterpieces.”
Now that I have some printmaking experience in my repertoire, I not only create monotypes but also the strips and shreds I work with in collage — rather than relying on cut-up magazines for my material as I once did. I love using color, pattern and texture in unpredictable ways. I am always amazed and amused to hear what people find hidden in my work…a man in the shadows, a barn, a field... Huh? I didn’t see THAT before!!!
Since exhibiting my work in 1994, I have been honored to have had my work selected, critiqued and often times recognized by some of the best in the art world, including; Jacqueline Serwer, then Associate Curator of Contemporary Art from the National Museum of American Art; Marla Prather, then Assistant Curator of 20th Century Art at The National Gallery of Art; and Terrie Sultan, then Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Galley of Art.
I hope visitors to my site enjoy viewing my work as much as I enjoy creating it. I will be adding many more prints in the weeks ahead so be sure to check back regularly. Thanks for visiting!
