Artist Statement:
The proper artistic response to digital technology is to embrace it as a new window on everything that's eternally human, and to use it with passion, wisdom, fearlessness and joy. –Ralph Lombreglia
Digital art is a form of expression that was not even dreamed of until the modern age. This art form uses color in virtual spaces that bring forth the birth of original techniques, and allows old techniques to be re-mastered anew. It is a time consuming process that allows an artist to use a computer as his pencil, pen, brush, or any combination of artist tools.
My images are focused on the figure. I think that the human body is the most expressive form. It is something that all humans can relate to both visually and emotionally. This relationship the viewer has with the figure is my primary concern. In my pieces I create charged universes by combining personal aspects of human nature with fantastic elements, in attempt to create an emotional dialog. Many times these fantastic elements are incorporated simply by my choice of color and texture. This struggle between the personal and the fantastical is there to help the viewer engage with the artwork.
As I work digitally, each image starts with an outline that traps the subject giving the viewer something simple to hold onto. Then ignoring local color, I use several overlaying layers of colored textures, forms, and lines. I use the computer as my art tool for the same reasons I use other conflicting elements in my art. It is another point to engage the viewer by presenting them imagery so personal, from a source viewed mainly as impersonal. The outcome is a dark gritty depiction of personal moments put on display for all to see. It is work that stems from my personal appreciation of quiet moments and my interests in digital technology. I strive for my unique visions to intrigue my viewers by giving them images that go beyond normal reality. Hoping that my imagery will linger with them. Even if I do not reach my viewers, there is always my own personal sense of accomplishment with my work. The rush of achievement I feel when I finish each of my pieces is what drives me. I am constantly pushing myself in a never-ending desire to get that next emotional high.
