Born in Toronto back in 1975, When I was 6 years old my family moved to a small city close to the Spanish/French border called Olot were I completed my high school and graphic design studies.
I started with photography in 1994 working for a small local magazine on weekends and as a photographer for a few shops. Little after I started working too with some small editorial companies and as an assistant for a studio photographer.
In 1997, tired from the little market possibilities I decided to leave Olot behind and went to seek some adventure going to live in Holland. There I worked with some magazines and as a correspondent for a Spanish agency as well as part timing with several other jobs to pull forward.
In 1999 Oudoor Magazine accepted a proposal to do a feature about adventure sports in the Pyrenees, That was the beginning of the end from my stay in Holland.
In 2000 I started working as a staff photographer for a regional newspaper based in Girona called El Punt, and later on, already living in Barcelona, for their sports newspaper El 9 Esportiu as a free-lancer.
2003 comes by and my work switches once more, doe to budget reasons El 9 Esportiu decides de get rid of the freelancers and, little time later I find a job as a publicity officer for a company close to Barcelona.
One year later I was convinced that this job was not for me and I started looking for photography clients stringing to string for several media and companies. Probably the most relevant are Newsweek, Bloomberg or the New York Times, with whom I still work together with a wide array of smaller national or international papers, magazines or companies.
Now, after all these years working as a photographer, I decided to put for sale some of my material, never have tried to sell prints as fine art before, but I would like to give it a try. Thanks for visiting my gallery and hope you like the pics, and a double thanks to any potential buyer who comes along and purchases one or several of my pictures.
Best wishes,
Xabier Mikel Laburu
