Artist's statement:
My first memory is of standing in my crib drawing on the wall with a brown crayon. I drew a rabbit wearing an apron. As soon as I finished, I saw a mistake. My bunny had both human and rabbit ears. Four ears! How embarrassing.
I recognize now that my bunny of old had two sets of ears for a reason. What a perceptive creature he must have been!
The stories and lessons and goofy snippets of life appearing in my art today are rarely - if ever - born of my own triumphs. Like that freaky four-eared bunny, my best art still comes in spite of my attempts to make it reflect what I know. If you see wisdom in my images, that perspective appears there because I need to learn that lesson, not because I have already mastered it. I make the art I need to see. I am still a little kid with a crayon. Well, with a whole heck of a lot of crayons now. I am still drawing things to learn. And if those images happen to touch your heart, too, all the better. Maybe between us we can find some meaning that would have eluded us had we remained separate.
I make art because I have always made art
and because I do not know any other way
and because I like the images that come out of me.
Art is how I make sense of the world. Art is how I communicate. Art is how I feel my emotions. The rest of my life can be a real challenge sometimes, but painting is always a treat. To me, these pictures I paint are like medicine that you ingest through your eyes. Or candy, but more than that. Goodness that shoots right through to where things matter.
Thank you for visiting. I am so glad you found me in this vast and thrilling cyber universe. Please know that your interest in my work means the world to me.
With love,
Melissa
