I'm interested in the subtleties of colour and have strong skills in the use of dry media - specifically pastels and coloured pencils. These together with a longstanding commitment to the value of drawing and sketching have provided me with a solid foundation for the development of my artwork. My preference is to work from life wherever possible and I very much enjoy working "en plein air" and in public places. I'm stimulated by repetition and variation - by the shapes and patterns I find in the natural world, the structure of objects and places and the way in which light impacts on both colour and form.
My website and very popular blogs, "Making a Mark" and "Travels with a Sketchbook", provide an insight into how I progress a work from initial sketch to completed painting.
Critical acclaim of my artwork focuses on my drawing skills and my use of colour. I exhibit in the UK and overseas and with various national art societies and I have work in private collections in the UK, Australia and the USA.
