Artist Statement My art and photography is all about discovery. I make images to help me determine what something is ‘all about’ and doing that gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

Small things fascinate me, I think tiny details are intrinsically interesting so a lot of my work involves getting up close to the subject matter.

Light, colour texture, decay, positive and negative forms, nature and visual ambiguity also play a large part in my portfolio.

In terms of training, my BA from Staffordshire university is in computer-based multimedia, which encompassed graphics, photography, media and fine art as the core disciplines. I think this helped me form a varied and divergent platform from which to develop a wide-ranging portfolio of imagery.

My work geographically centers on the Northern England, North Wales, upstate New York and the Gulf coast of Florida but wherever I am, I’m never more than a few feet away from a camera.

Things work on several levels at the same time, when I see an old rusty door hinge I see the history of the object, the lives of the people who made it and used it, the surface decay and texture and the way the laws of the universe are working to reduce everything down to its simplest form. Essentially this is at the heart of all my art, even in the simplest of bits and pieces there is great complexity.

In many ways when I take a photograph I’m trying to re-evoke the simplistic and inquisitive way I looked at objects when I was a child, I was always intrigued by the littlest things in my toy box such as the tread on a toy car tyre (written as tire in the US) or the tiniest transfers on my Airfix model kits. Children are hard-wired to find out about the world around them, my work tries to discover things from the same perspective.
