Artist Statement I've been very engaged with art and the art world for a long time. I've seen hundreds, maybe thousands of art shows -- with much enjoyment. I love contemporary art and art from past eras.

My own art is wide ranging in style and content but I'd say I tend toward the humorous and the offbeat, even the slightly surrealistic.

I studied art in college -- both art history and art making. I was a film student at the San Francisco Art Institute but was also making other kinds of art and taking photos.

I have shown my art in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Florida. Galleries where my art has been shown include Barrister's in New Orleans, Lucky Street in Key West, and Hyaena Gallery in Los Angeles. My work has also been seen in a number of other galleries.

I taught art history at Otis College of Art and Design. I have written two seminal books on art -- WEIRDO DELUXE and WEIRDO NOIR. They explore what is known as Lowbrow or Pop Surrealist art. That kind of art is often cartoony, offbeat, somewhat transgressive, and heavily influence by lowbrow and fringe pop culture.

My own art has been described as outsider art by some while others have said that my drawings remind them of Crumb's work. I have at times purposefully painted in an outsider/naive art style. I like the look and feel of so-called "bad" art that is not slick and polished. Kitsch art that is good-bad appeals to me. It's tacky and funny. I love cartoon art. I love humor in art.
