Denise R Fleming, Memphis, TN Member Since February 2011 Artist Statement Denise is drawn to the transient contrasts of shadow and light, and their special power to evoke mystery. What the shadows and light reveal inspire her. Primal life forms, deep textures, glimpses of forgotten times, our connection to each other and the natural world. These themes and interests are intuitive and without logical thought. They are simply intrinsic expressions, her inner voice. In her paintings, Denise uses watercolor, gesso, ink, acrylic, pencil, and a variety of materials to achieve a textured surface and other visual effects.
Denise currently lives in Memphis, Tennessee and holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in painting from Western Michigan University. She is the recipient of the Robert and Eleanor DeVries Art Award (1998, 1999, 2000), the Angie Gaymen Carmer Art Scholarship (1999), the Student Enrichment Grant Fund for Art (1998), and the WMU Permanent Art Collection Purchase Award (2000).
