Description Ni hao means hello in Mandarin but Hau, spelled with a 'u' is the Hawaiian name for this tree. Looking at the sunlight streaming through these leaves, how could you feel anything but welcoming?
Whitney Miyahira, Honolulu Member Since February 2012 Artist Statement An island girl through and through, Whitney was raised in Kealakekua on the island of Hawai'i and now resides on the island of O'ahu. She currently calls the Windward side home in beautiful Kane'ohe. Whether it is through dancing hula, swimming at Lanikai, or wading through a lo'i kalo, living in Hawai'i has inspired her to appreciate beauty and driven her to capture it through film.
Photography really makes my world go round but "real" photography (where I actually had some idea of what I was doing), for me, started in high school with a photography class under the direction of Mr. Ed Tompkins. That class had us doing everything from creating a camera out of a cardboard box to rolling film. In 2008, my Christmas present to myself was a Nikon Coolpix P80. All shots prior to 2012 were taken with that camera. 2012 includes images from both the Coolpix P80 and my newest acquisition, a Nikon D3100.
